Celebrating Tahltan Day on October 18th

On October 18, we recognize Tahltan Day, a day that holds immense meaning for the Tahltan Nation and TNDC. This day commemorates the 1910 Declaration of the Tahltan Tribe, a commanding time in history when Tahltans stood united, asserting their sovereignty and rights to their land. It remains the guiding principle of the Tahltan Nation today, 115 years on.

HISTORY OF THE 1910 DECLARATION

In 1910, as part of a growing movement to assert First Nations rights on the coast and the southern interior of BC, the chief of the Tahltan Nation, Chief Nanok, along with 80 other members of the tribe signed the declaration. The document claims sovereignty over Tahltan land and declares any land interests concerning the traditional territory of the Tahltan Nation to be settled directly with the Tahltan people. It represents a legal declaration of rights of Tahltan individuals to the Canadian government and British monarch. Tahltans have yet to extinguish their Aboriginal title by any other legal process. WHAT THE 1910 DECLARATION MEANS FOR TNDC

For TNDC, Tahltan Day is more than a historic date. As the business arm of the Tahltan Nation, TNDC’s responsibility is to advance economic opportunity while honouring Tahltan values, respect for the land, cultural preservation, and community strength.

Sovereignty and Self-Governance: the Declaration reminds us TNDC’s ultimate responsibility is to the Tahltan people and their continued control over their lands and resources.

Protection of the Land: TNDC prioritizes sustainable practices that protect natural resources and uphold the integrity of Tahltan Territory.

Economic Empowerment and Opportunity: We actively create opportunities that benefit Tahltan people, ensuring that economic growth flows back into the community.

Unity and Resilience: the Declaration was a symbol of Tahltan unity in 1910, and continues to inspire resilience today. TNDC fosters collaboration with the Iskut Band, Tahltan Band, and Tahltan Central Government to strengthen Nation bonds.
