Chair's Message 2015 Annual Report

It has been 30 years since the inception of TNDC and today we are a strong, progressive and financially-sustainable corporation. Our ability to build upon and nurture what we have today began decades ago. TNDC was started by passionate Tahltan visionaries determined to ensure our Nation benefits from responsible and sustainable resource development in our territory.

The leaders of the generation before us believed in a vision and worked together, embarking on a concept to allow our Nation to prosper. This vision and commitment has repeatedly been embraced by consecutive Tahltan leaders, many of whom have continued to work with TNDC at the leadership and board level, and who have each contributed to advancing TNDC’s goals and capabilities. It was not the effort of one, but a sum of the contributions of many.

Today, TNDC is a quintessential success story of a Nation overcoming the plight of many Canadian aboriginal communities, as we continue to exercise our title and rights to our resource rich land to ensure our financial prosperity. TNDC has matured beyond its status as a business for Tahltans; it has become principal in providing for our communities and our families. Moreover, it is a symbol of our independence.

I am honoured to be serving my second term as chair of the board, working with a forward-thinking and committed group of Tahltan directors who embrace the vision of our Tahltan leaders, past and present. The wealth of knowledge, experience, and diversity amongst the TNDC board has supported the corporation in advancing beyond industry benchmarks.

Our focus continues to be on policy implementation, upholding ethics, and establishing metrics to measure TNDC’s success in achieving its goals. We are accountable to our shareholders, ensuring democracy at the decision-making table, practicing a fair and transparent governing culture and exercising prudence, professionalism and accountability.

The board reaffirms our commitment to you as the Tahltan peoples’ company to ensuring TNDC’s economic, environmental and social prosperity and delivering on our mandate to maintain a profitable organization that generates wealth, economic, employment and training opportunities for all members of the Tahltan Nation while adhering to Tahltan values, in the year ahead.
